Title:
Hornblende 40Ar/39Ar dates for Miocene sediment samples collected at Site U1521 during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 to the Ross Sea, Antarctica
code:
http://data.bgs.ac.uk/id/dataHolding/13607797
Abstract:
This dataset comprises 40Ar/39Ar dated detrital hornblende grains for 5 samples from IODP Expedition 374 Site U1521 to the Ross Sea, collected on the RV JOIDES Resolution. Shipboard biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy suggests the samples are early Miocene in age (McKay et al., 2019, Proceedings of the International Ocean Discovery Program). These data can be compared to terrestrial geochronological data, allowing the changing provenance of the sediments to be traced.

statement:
Hornblende grains were picked from the magnetic separate of samples prepared for U-Pb dating of zircons (150-300 µm size fraction). The samples were co-irradiated with Fish Canyon sanidine (28.201 ± 0.046 Ma) (Kupier et al., 2008, Science) for 8 hours in the CLICIT (Cadmium Lined In-Core Irradiation Tube) facility at Oregon State University reactor. Samples were loaded into planchettes, evacuated in a chamber with a ZnSe window, then heated with a CO2 laser to release the gas. Samples were exposed to hot Zr-Al getters to remove reactive gases, and the inert gases were let into a VG5400 noble gas mass spectrometer and measured with peak hopping on an analogue multiplier in static vacuum mode. Backgrounds were corrected based on frequent measurements of blanks (~ every 4 unknowns) and mass discrimination was corrected based on measurements of air (~ every 12 unknowns). Corrections for nuclear interferences are based on reported measurements from the Berkeley Geochronology Lab (Renne, 1995, EPSL). Analyses and data reduction were performed using MassSpec, a program written by Al Deino at the BGC. Errors are reported at 1 sigma.
