Title:
Foraminifera-based data spanning several tephra horizons in cores from IODP Leg 350, sites U1436 and U1437 (NERC grant NE/M005232/1)

Abstract:
The dataset worksheet contains a list of core samples taken during IODP Exp 350 and foraminifera-based data for selected samples. The work was started with the aim of reconstructing palaeoproductivity changes (namely surface-to-deep carbon isotope gradients and U/Ca measurements) over tephra layers in order to test the ‘ash fertilisation hypothesis’. However, the work has been temporarily halted given the on-board volcanologists ongoing concerns that the ash layers in the selected cores have been reworked and therefore are not primary. Because of the induration and silicification of the core samples at quite shallow depths in the core, the other aim of the project (to reconstruct palaeoceanographic changes from 16-0 Ma) was not possible. The spreadsheet contains a full list of samples and a list of samples that have been examined and analysed. The data worksheet contains the no. of Globigerinoides ruber (with weight), Oridorsalis umbonatus, Uvigerina spp. and Cibicidoides spp. specimens for specific samples. For selected samples, stable oxygen and carbon isotopes are given and a graph of the carbon isotopes vs depth in core is presented.

statement:
The cores were extracted on board the JOIDES Resolution in April and May 2014. Dr E John selected a 2x2 cm sample over selected intervals spanning both mafic and felsic tephra layers in cores U1437B and U1436A. At Cardiff University, selected samples were subjected to the following procedure: 1. Samples were soaked in distilled water overnight and gently disaggregated using fingertips. All samples were easy to disaggregate and did not require the use of detergent. 2. Samples were then wet-sieved through a 63-µm mesh and the coarse fraction was dried in an oven at 60°C, and weighed. 3. The sample was then dry-sieved to extract the 250-355 µm size fraction, which was used for foraminifera picking. 4. In each examined split, specimens of G. ruber, O. umbonatus, Uvigerina spp., and Cibicidoides spp. were picked using a fine paintbrush and then stored in micropalaeontological slides. 5. Those required for analysis were ultrasonically-cleaned and split open using a cleaned glass slide. Any adhering organic matter or silicate was removed using a fine paintbrush. The samples were then ultrasonically cleaned in 18ΩM water and left to dry in polypropylene microcentrifuge tubes. 6. Samples were then weighed into tin cups and placed into acid-cleaned tubes for stable isotope analysis which was performed on a Thermo MAT 253 with Kiel IV carbonate preparation device.
