Stable isotope and sedimentological data from Wallywash Great Pond, Jamaica (NERC Grant NE/K00610X/1)

Oxygen and carbon isotope measurements from multiple-shell samples of the ostracod Cypretta brevisapta, and loss-on-ignition determinations, from Core WAGP taken from Wallywash Great Pond, Jamaica. A chronology for the core is provided by radiocarbon dates and short-lived radio-isotopes. The data provide a proxy for changing hydroclimate for the period 2000 – 200 CE.

Data Quality

Core WAGP was recovered using a Colinvaux-Vohnout drop-hammer modified piston corer. Ostracod valves of the species Cypretta brevisaepta were isolated and picked from the dried >250µm fraction of each 1cm increment of sediment sing a fine nylon brush under a low-power (20x) binocular microscope. Valves were checked for impurities and then multiple-valve samples were analysed using a ThermoFinnigan Delta Plus XP mass spectrometer connected to a GasBench. Oxygen and carbon isotope values are reported in standard delta notation relative to the VPDB (Vienna Pee Dee belemnite) standard, with uncertainties of 0.09‰ for δ13C and 0.20‰ for δ18O (1σ) at University College London. Organic carbon and carbonate content were determined on every other 1cm increment of the core by loss-on-ignition at 550C and 950˚C, respectively.
