Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) Core Scanning Dataset (NERC Grant NE/N018508/1)

A core scanning dataset from part of the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) drill core that was drilled onshore in the Cardigan Bay Basin, Wales, UK. This core scan dataset was obtained using the Itrax XRF Scanner MC at the Core Scanning Facility (CSF) at the British Geological Survey (BGS), UK. It contains X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental data expressed as elemental counts or peak areas and optical images of each representative core stick. The dataset was created within the scope of the JET project (Integrated understanding of Early Jurassic Earth system and timescale) - https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=NE%2FN018508%2F1 This project has received funding from the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP) and the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

Data Quality

: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements and optical images were collected using an Itrax MC core scanner at the Core Scanning Facility (CSF), BGS, UK. XRF was measured at 1 cm step-size and 10 s integration per step. For each core section, a standard resolution optical image was performed (210 microns per pixel). A 100 s reference scan on a glass sample (NIST-610) was performed every 5th core section and a replicate scan every 10th core section to monitor the stability of the analysis and identify any poor data. The XRF sumspectra for each core stick was peak fitted using the processing software Q-Spec (version 8.60). The processed XRF data was compiled in a final excel worksheet. All raw XRF spectral data from the core scanner will be retained by BGS and can be requested from enquiries@bgs.ac.uk.
