2006 Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA8 Portland Bill area Cruise Report for Emu Surveyor, SeaTrax Xplorer and MV Otter (English Channel)

Cruise report for Multibeam swath bathymetry, sidescan sonar and underwater video survey in the vicinity of Portland Bill as part of the Department of Trade and Industry's (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA8) . Emu Ltd was commissioned by Geotek Ltd on behalf of the DTI to perform hydrographic and ecological surveys within the vicinity of Portland Bill to further understand regional processes around a tidal headland. Survey work was required specifically to investigate the sediment processes and seabed habitats present.

Data Quality

Emu Ltd was commissioned by Geotek Ltd on behalf of the DTI to perform hydrographic and ecological surveys within the vicinity of Portland Bill as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme. Phase I survey work took place between 21 June and 20 October 2006 initially from the vessel Emu Surveyor. However, due to engine failure this vessel was replaced by the SeaTrax Xplorer. A combination of multibeam swath bathymetry, sidescan sonar and underwater video and grabbing techniques were planned. Bad weather and challenging sea conditions were encountered much of the time and as a result the majority of the survey effort was directed towards achieving as much multibeam and sidescan coverage as possible. Video work was limited, and no grabbing took place, during the Phase I surveys. Phase II survey work (ecological components) took place between 14.03.07 and 30.03.07 onboard the vessel MV Sea Otter. The phase II surveys collected video footage and grab samples using a 0.1m2 Hamon grab, over a total of eight days during March 2007, two of which were too rough to work safely due to sea conditions.
