2004 Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA6 SV Lia SEA6 Survey - seabed sampling survey with video and photography (Irish Sea)

As part of the Department of Trade and Industry's (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA6) a seabed sampling, video and geophysical survey was undertaken in the central Irish Sea with specific focus given to areas of Liverpool Bay and Tremadog Bay. The survey objectives were to conduct a strategic environmental study of locations where features of interest had been previously identified by organisations such as the Countryside Council for Wales and the School of Ocean Sciences. Survey operations were focused on the following features: Possible methane-derived carbonate reefs in Cardigan Bay; Gassy Sediments in Tremadog Bay, Biogenic Reefs - Horse mussel beds.

36 video files are available. 186 photographs are available. 52 samples were collected using a Day Grab. A cruise report is available

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) data portal - The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) data portal provides free access to available data and reports which have been produced through the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change SEA process. The site is run and managed by BGS on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Many files can be downloaded directly from this website. Those that are too large to download can be ordered via the website for postal delivery from BGS.

Data Quality

As part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme SeaStar Survey carried out the video survey using Video Camera Seabotix LBV 150, Kongsberg Simrad OE14-108 digital stills camera and flash gun mounted in a substantial seabed frame. Osiris Projects collected samples using a Day Grab.

Ocean Maid was contracted by Ocean Maid to lead an inshore survey team. Osiris projects conducted the geophysical data. Sea Star survey conducted the sea floor video surveys. Data were collected using a Geoswath Multibeam Echo Sounder, Geoacoustics 159 (410KHz) side scan sonar, Applied Acoustics AA220 (surface-towed boomer system), Geochirp system (alternative sub-bottom profiler), Konsberg/Simrad OE14-108 Digital stills camera and flash gun mounted in a substantial seabed frame.
