2002 Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA2 Laboratory report. Grain size analyses sea bed sediments collected in North Sea, 2001. BGS Tech Note CR/01/193

This report is the product of the laboratory analyses carried out on sediments collected on the MV Kommandor Jack during the summer or 2001 as part of Department of Trade and Industry's (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA2. The results of the analyses include tables and curves from the samples collected from the southern North Sea, the associated distribution curves, results of the analyses of the fine-grained samples collected from the northern North Sea, and the results of the Loss on Ignition analysis. An Excel data file is also available.

Data Quality

Samples were removed from the upper 3cm of a megacore sample collected by Harley Anderson Ltd during the summer of 2001 from MV Kommandor Jack as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme. Hartley Anderson Ltd undertook the initial survey in conjunction with Geotek Ltd. Laboratory analyses were performed by the British Geological Survey. Samples from the southern area were initially wet sieved to separate the major fractions (gravel, sand and mud) before being dried at 101-103 C. The resultant weights were tabulated and processed to produce graphs and distribution curves. Samples with a mud content of less than 5% were selected for further analyses on the Laser Diffraction Analyser.
