MINDeSEA WP7 Exploration in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Sea (Area)

"Exploration in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Sea" refers to marine exploration of mineral accumulations, deposits, resources and reserves on the Atlantic. Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Sea seabed. The target for MINDeSEA WP 7 is (i) to create a new dataset on the distribution of the explored areas for submarine mineral resources in Europe; (ii) to propose recommendations for new unexplored areas; and (iii) to recommend pilot areas with high potential of discovering new submarine mineral resource mineral accumulations

The MINDeSEA proposal is to compile fragmented marine data products and metadata on areas explored and investigated for mineral deposits and make them available through an information platform. The portal will provide access to data and metadata held by each organization based on standards developed in the Geo-Seas and EMODnet-Geology project and data products compiled at a scale of 1:250,000. We need to know the distribution of the explored areas for submarine mineral resources in pan-European Seas. It is necessary to identify areas with potential deposits as sources of strategic and rare metals within the EU and associated countries waters. The specific objectives of MINDeSEA will be: - Devise a delineated baseline study to integrate geological, geophysical, mineralogical and geochemical data from pan-European sources in order to create a new dataset on the distribution of the explored areas for submarine mineral resources in pan-European seas. - Include GIS database in the GeoERA information platform and integrated and harmonized with applicable European databases. - Recommend new unexplored areas with high potential of discovering new submarine mineral resources, based on known geological settings where mineral accumulations are most likely. - Propose pilot areas: Analyse present-day status in terms of regulation, legislation, environmental impacts to demonstrate the efficiency of a pan-European research approach for mineral exploration. These areas will be released as recommendations for future exploration of base metals and CRM. - Communicate the potential to alleviate dependence on European imports of these metals, as well as social and ethical benefits.

Data Quality

Data modeling used D2.8.II.4 Data Specification on Geology - Technical Guidelines to generate data schema for Geology Geophysics Campaign. A Campaign is a Geophysical activity extending over a limited time range and limited area for producing similar geophysical measurements, processing results or models. Campaign is used to document geophysical surveys as measurement campaigns. The INSPIRE Geophysics - Campaign includes a feature type called GeophObjectType and tables called SpatialSampllingFeature, Campaign, client, contractor, cruiseInformation, distributionInformation, DocumentCitation and verticalExtent. For MINDeSEA Work Package Leader the following tables called exploration, other and vocabularies were included.
